One Day in Manchester: How to Make the Most of Your Visit

For my 23rd birthday, Mum and I decided to celebrate with a girls’ night away in Manchester.

From football fame to the buzzing Trafford Centre and the impressive MediaCityUK, Manchester just keeps getting better. It’s perfect for a weekend away with your partner, a solo city break, a family day out—or a sneaky getaway with your mum, like me! There’s truly something for everyone to enjoy. Here’s how to spend one day in Manchester.

One day in Manchester itinerary

Morning: Start Your Day with Shopping at the Trafford Centre

Our first day in Manchester was dedicated to some much-needed retail therapy at the Trafford Centre. It’s a shopper’s paradise with everything from high-street stores to luxury brands, and even some unique entertainment options.

While I’ve done a separate post all about the Trafford Centre, if you’ve only got one day in Manchester, you can still stop by for a quick look at its stunning architecture or a coffee break.

Afternoon: Explore the city with a Hop-On Hop-Off Bus Tour

In the afternoon, we wanted to fit in as much sightseeing as possible without exhausting ourselves. That’s when we decided to hop on one of my favourite ways to see a city on a short trip: a hop-on hop-off bus tour.

These open-top buses run on a continuous 90-minute loop, stopping at all the top attractions in Manchester. Most tours let you use your ticket for 48–72 hours, but if you only have one day, this is a fantastic way to get a feel for the city.

We chose the Sightseeing Manchester tour, which has 12 different stops covering key landmarks. Tickets are affordable, starting at £8 for children and £15 for adults, making it a budget-friendly option

Although we didn’t have time to hop off at each stop, we stayed on the bus for the entire loop, boarding at Stop Two in Piccadilly Gardens. Ideally, the tour recommends starting at Stop One at Bridgewater Hall, but the driver was kind enough to let us join from our chosen stop.

The commentary on board provided us with a wealth of information about the city’s rich history and its iconic landmarks. Each stop on the route offered something unique and memorable, ensuring there was something for everyone to enjoy. Some of the highlights included:

  • MediaCityUK: A vibrant and bustling hub for digital media, broadcasting, and creative industries. This area was full of energy and innovation, making it my favourite part of the tour. I was particularly captivated by its modern architecture and lively atmosphere. I can’t wait to return and explore it in greater depth!
  • National Football Museum: An absolute must-visit for football fans and enthusiasts, this museum beautifully showcases the history and cultural significance of the beautiful game. From legendary artefacts to interactive exhibits, it’s a place where football’s past truly comes to life.
  • Manchester and Salford Cathedral: A stunning piece of Gothic architecture nestled in the heart of the city. The cathedral’s intricate design and historic significance left me in awe. It’s a peaceful and inspiring stop that offers a glimpse into the city’s spiritual and architectural heritage.
  • Museum of Science and Industry: A fascinating destination for anyone interested in Manchester’s industrial legacy. The museum delves deep into the city’s pivotal role during the Industrial Revolution, offering engaging exhibits that highlight its technological and scientific contributions to the world.

Each of these landmarks added depth and character to the tour, painting a vivid picture of Manchester’s culture, history, and innovation.

Evening: Manchester at Night

If you have time after your tour, there’s still plenty more to explore. Depending on your interests, you could:

Take a stroll through Castlefeild Urban Heritage Park, known for its cancels and Roman history or perhaps exploring Chinatown is more your style, it is one of the largest in Europe, and you’ll be sure to find a spot for some delicious dinner or a quick snack.

Tips for Spending One Day in Manchester

Plan ahead

With just one day to explore Manchester, it’s essential to focus on the attractions that match your interests the most and create a well-structured itinerary to maximize your time. The city has a diverse mix of history, culture, and modern attractions, so a little planning can ensure a truly memorable experience.

Start early

The earlier you begin your day, the more opportunities you’ll have to explore Manchester’s incredible attractions without feeling rushed or overwhelmed. Starting early not only gives you a head start before the crowds but also allows you to enjoy each destination at a comfortable pace, soaking in the details without the pressure of time.

Use the bus tour

The bus tour is an easy, efficient, and stress-free way to explore a wide range of Manchester’s top attractions in a short amount of time. With its well-planned route, the tour takes you to key landmarks all while providing insightful commentary about the city’s history and culture. You can sit back, relax, and enjoy panoramic views of the city from the comfort of your seat. It’s an excellent choice for first-time visitors or those with limited time who want a comprehensive overview of Manchester’s highlights.

Bring comfortable shoes

Even if you use the bus, expect plenty of walking to fully experience the attractions. Landmarks like the Manchester Cathedral and areas like the Northern Quarter or MediaCityUK are best explored on foot to appreciate their charm and character. Walking also lets you discover hidden gems and soak in the city’s atmosphere, so comfortable shoes are a must!
